The past week I have been framing in preparation for a solo show at a local coffee shop, but I did try to steal a couple minutes each day for sketchbook work.
Today I set a timer for ten minutes and used a graphite stick to draw shapes. I am really drawn to elliptic leaf shapes, and I had to push myself to do something different. The pull to vessel shapes is back as well. I have not painted vessels since 2022.
I think I underuse shapes in my work, so this activity is something I may double down on for a bit. It felt like a good warm-up, even though after my ten minutes were done, I I had to go back to framing.
Prompts for the week:
How do shapes figure into your work? What are your favorite shapes? How could you practice expressing them in different ways?
Experiment with wet paint on a substrate and water in a squirt bottle. Make a mess and see where it takes you.
Would you rather work in a room alone, or in a large studio space with other people around? Tell me why in the comments!
